Thirteen years ago, my husband’s company asked him to work overseas and in return, they pay for some of our living expenses. Not a bad gig! I know some of you are thinking “wahoo! sign me up!” Others can’t imagine living in a foreign land away from family and friends. Some of you are expats and also had to choose between the comfort and familiarity of home and the unknown adventure of a life lived overseas. We’ve learned both are lucky choices to have.
We’ve now lived in Malaysia, Vietnam and Singapore and became more flexible in our approach to just about everything, especially what we eat. We learned that food is one of the best ways to connect with others. When you travel and seek out local dishes rather than searching for the first western option on the menu, people smile. It shows people that you are interested in their culture and what they have to offer.
For a long time, I’ve wanted to share our favorite recipes with friends and beyond. Both of my daughters have the opportunity to explore personal passions during set times during the week. One chose photography and the other tackled “how to build a website.” We decided now was the perfect time to experiment with a blog that allows us to use our complimentary skills to create something together. Since Malaysia was our first overseas home, we’re kicking things off with a simple Malaysian Chicken Satay that’s super easy to make and know that everyone will enjoy!
